Team Structure

 

The Environmental Risk and Sustainability Manager reports to the Head of Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) who in turn reports to the Director of Safety, Strategy and Support Services (SS&SS). You will oversee the line management of six Environment and Sustainability advisors and supporting several “In Business” Health, Safety and Sustainability (HSS) Advisers with environmental issues across the business footprint.

 

Job Purpose

Develop the environment and sustainability strategy to achieve UK Power Networks vision to become the most environmentally and socially responsible Distribution Network Operator. Provide advice to the company on environmental issues, ensuring that environmental policies, procedures and guidance are developed governing all activities and assets for UK Power Networks.

 

Principal Accountabilities:

  • You will ensure the Environmental Management System is prioritised based on environmental impacts, meets all legal requirements as a minimum, reflects our needs and enables ongoing improvement in the fulfillment of UK Power Networks vision.
  • Review new and amended Environmental legislation and assess its relevance to all parts of the business and maintain the legislation register.
  • You will play an essential part in partner engagement events to raise the profile of UKPN’s environmental plans.
  • Lead the team in the development, communication and implementation of environmental procedures to ensure legal compliance.
  • You will assist the Head of SHE in representing the interests of the company in all relevant external forums by influencing public interest groups and regulatory bodies including: the Environment Agency, Local Authorities, Natural England, English Heritage, Water Companies, DEFRA, OFGEM and the Energy Networks Association.
  • Support the business to undertake reviews of incident data leading to trend analysis, preventative measures, and ensure efficient close out of actions.
  • Collation and interpretation of environmental performance data to meet both internal and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • You will support the business in undertaking incident investigations.
  • Provide excellent customer service in the end to end management of statutory nuisance complaints (predominantly noise related).
  • Provision of environmental expertise to the internal auditing team to support compliance and risk-based audits. Be the the environmental expert for 3rd party accreditation audits, including ISO 14001.
  • Give environmental training programmes for employees and contractors to an accredited standard. 
  • You will ensure the successful completion of the Waste and Pollution management projects.
  • Ensure all environmental permits and consents are in place and adhered to across the business footprint.
  • Achieve UKPN’s ‘Green Action Plan’ which sets out clear environmental targets.

 

Knowledge, Qualifications, Essential Experience and Competencies

  • We ask that you will be IEMA Chartered Environmentalist CEnv (or working towards)
  • Degree qualified (or level 6 equivalent) in environmental science or other relevant subject.
  • You will be in the possession of additional qualifications in environmental management, auditing or sustainability.
  • Awareness of environmental issues in the electricity distribution industry.
  • Build good working relationships across the company to ensure that the highest standards of internal customer service and consultation are achieved and be seen as the point of reference for environmental matters.
  • Manage companywide projects to meet desired environmental goals and also achieve wider business benefit.
  • You will be comfortable presenting across all levels of the organisation from board level to shop floor.
  • Good planning and decision making skills.
  • A full driving licence.

Health & Safety Requirements:

Must be committed to the General Safety Policy statement, Stay Safe and any related safety programmes, must be aware of your contribution, including the requirement to monitor safety performance and compliance with the systems established to help maintain high safety standards.

Must be familiar with the safety legislation that is relevant to your post and comply with the necessary statutory requirements. These will include the Health & Safety at Work Act, Fire Precautions Act and associated regulations. Ensure that the services provided in their area comply with all relevant safety and legal requirements.
