About the role


In this three-year programme, you’ll join our Pipeline Maintenance Centre (PMC) based at one of operational sites around the country. PMC provides are an engineering department providing solutions for customers problems, PMC also provide 24/7 emergency response service for National Grid UKT, UKD and third party operators of the gas transmission and distribution networks. You’ll be joining one of the fastest growing parts of our Gas Transmission operation, and you’ll become part of our team of highly trained Engineers and Technicians who ensure the safe, secure and reliable operation of our gas network. You’ll immediately take a very ‘hands on’ approach and develop a variety of specialist skills. Once qualified, there will be periods of working away and support to cover the stand-by rota for PMC.

Role requirements


  • You must have or be predicted to gain Five GCSE’s graded A-C / 4-9 or equivalent, two of which must be Maths and English Language along with three others from any of the following subject areas – IT, Technical Drawing, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Science or any other Engineering subject, English Literature, Geography or History 



  • An Engineering Diploma/Qualification i.e. BTEC (grade pass) along with GCSE Maths and English graded A-C /4-9 or equivalent


  • To apply for this role, you must hold a valid full UK car driving licence, or be willing to learn to drive and agree to secure a valid full UK car driving licence within 12 months after joining the programme or as soon as possible after your 17th  birthday.    


  • To live within a 30 minute travel time of the Ambergate site. More locations are available and are listed below. 
What you'll do


You will:


  • Undertake installation, inspection, commissioning, operation, repair, maintenance and emergency response activities associated with Terminal, Compressor Station and Pipeline and AGI systems and assets in accordance with relevant policies and procedures, delivering performance excellence within relevant discipline to optimise work effectiveness and efficiencies, maximising asset and plant availability and reliability 
  • Undertake safe setting to work for self and others, of work activities in accordance with the safe control of operations procedures contributing to a team culture of safe working and safety compliance in all work activities with National Grid Policies and Procedures
  • Supporting and maintaining the health and safety of self and third parties and complying with PMC risk assessments and method statements
  • Maintain accurate site maintenance, asset, operational and safe control of operations records of all work activities and operations undertaken to ensure compliance with relevant policies and regulatory requirements 
  • Developing the required skills to carry out specialist PMC services such as; various pipe cutting methods, drilling methods on various sizes of pipes, CCTV surveys, pipe blasting and coating and many more skills, this leading to an ability to act as team leader on minor projects
  • Support the construction and commissioning of new assets onto the gas transmission system and other non-load related projects in accordance with relevant policies and procedures, identify the requirement to replace/upgrade existing plant and equipment, participate in the design of minor modifications, and the provision of technical support within discipline and competencies as required 
  • Contribute to the development, review and update of emergency, security, safety, operational and environmental plans and procedures to ensure safe and cost effective operation of plant and equipment, undertake the roles of incident controller and site main controller during planned and emergency situations in accordance with the on and off site emergency plans, monitoring and control of site security operations, and participation in duty standby rota and occasionally shift working arrangements 
  • Ensure that the high-pressure pipeline system is protected, including the monitoring of third party work, aerial sighting response, cathodic protection monitoring, support of the in-line inspection programme, and undertake competent person role associated with routine and low complex non-routine operational procedures

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship you will attain a Gas Network Craftsperson Level 3 Pipeline Maintenance qualification, from there your opportunities within National Grid are endless, with a wide range of potential career options.

What you'll get


You will receive a starting salary of £17,940 and you will work towards a level 3 qualification worth approximately £20,000. You will also have access to a number of additional benefits such as 25 days’ holiday, full board accommodation whilst away at our training academy and all travel expenses paid for when you’re not at your base location.
