This role holder reports to the Manager, Asset Management and Technology on a function basis, and with dotted line reporting to the Design and Technical Manager, Heathrow. You will work as part of a diverse technical team, delivering industry-leading asset management stewardship solutions to Heathrow Airport and other private clients.


The Senior Engineer, Assets and Technology will bring an inquisitive, tenacious, data-driven and client-facing approach to asset management and technology solutions: analysing asset information and compliance, developing asset strategies, performing feasibility studies and business case assessments, risk and value prioritisation and identifying value and work with colleagues in the business and suppliers to bring significant improvement projects, which apply fresh solutions.  You will help ensure that there is no unplanned disruption to the electricity supply within Heathrow airport and show UKPN Services’ commitment to work towards achieving best practice.


You will ensure that UK Power Networks Services produce high-quality solutions that comply with relevant legislation, client and UK Power Networks Services standards.

You will work and act with autonomy and communicate strategically with Senior Management and with project specific budget responsibility.

Typical accountabilities for the Senior Engineer, Assets and Technology will include:

Asset Management:

  • Develop and implement the delivery of asset management across the UK Power Networks Services business that achieve Good Industry Practice (ISO 55001), for systems up to 400kV;
  • Management of the assets in accordance to BS 55001 taking responsibility for the technical assurance and compliance of assets. Provide clarity on interface boundaries (design, maintenance, ownership and operational) and ensure there are no “orphan” assets.
  • Develop asset refurbishment and replacement programmes due to condition and asset health, prioritising and optimising non-load related investment;
  • Develop and maintain asset refurbishment and replacement intervention / investment strategies;
  • Develop and produce the annual, medium and long-term maintenance programmes, covering inspection and maintenance for acceptance by our client. Manage our client interface to ensure all daily maintenance requirements are met whilst minimising change to the building tenants/ users.
  • Conduct audits on systems, equipment and maintenance strategies to ensure compliance with internal standards and address actions arising. Maintain audit readiness for external review;
  • Oversee asset information compliance in the relevant IT systems for Heathrow and UK Power Networks Services and maintaining the integrity of asset master data and change control. Work with the central Asset Information team to ensure agreement of Work Order planning to corporate strategies. Proposing custom adjustments to suit Heathrow site.
  • Organise Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) studies;
  • Develop and maintain inspection and maintenance manuals and handbooks;
  • Help develop an Asset Risk and Prioritisation (ARP) model;
  • Provide both ARP and non-ARP modelling capability to support prioritisation and optimisation activities for non-load related asset investment;
  • Advise on asset fault rate analysis;
  • Lead asset engineering condition assessments and creating asset condition reports;
  • Lead network incident reviews, including management of the faults reported on HAL’s ‘One Engineering’ system and ensuring all faults are rectified.
  • Lead on the technical input to the team and into UK Power Networks Services tenders;
  • Ensure that design solutions are robust to support tender submissions being developed;
  • Provide technical support for business opportunities with relevant material and preparing tenders;
  • Assess cost/benefit trade-off of technical solutions and supporting the technical decision making processes;
  • Identify areas for technological advancement whilst maintaining excellent engineering standards;
  • Identify and deploy the technical skills, resource levels and systems to achieve projects, including the engagement of external resources ;
  • Lead/manage engineers and/or analysts to provide leading asset management and ensure career development;
  • Manage budgets and project deliverables; and
  • Develop strategic approaches and contribute to the upkeep of the Asset Management Plan for Heathrow and other sites. Aid in the planning of network development and capacity management together with the Project and Design teams.
  • Ensure compliance with CDM and UK Power Networks Services Health and Safety policies for work ;
  • Manage the scheduling of tasks and putting people to work are undertaken in a compliant manner, appropriate for the complexity of the task and competence and skill level of the recipient.
  • Work with the Lead Operational Engineer (Maintenance) to ensure operational staffing levels, both capacity and competence wise, are provisioned for to meet current and forecast workloads. Ensure competency framework in place and job descriptions available.
  • Together with the Lead Operational Engineer (Maintenance), manage the development plans for all the maintenance team to ensure that they are competent to undertake all maintenance tasks.
  • Manage asset risk assessments and develop mitigation plans to maintain safe working environment for operatives and reduce business exposure to deteriorating and life expired equipment;
  • Provide real-time asset management response and technical support;
  • Seek opportunities to develop future business related to the airport network and make recommendation to improve the network resilience
  • Develop a strategy for managing spares provision, stock management and stores cataloguing.
  • Undertake additional activities in line with the job level and competency, including motivating and leading staff.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • Degree level or equivalent in engineering or science or equivalent experience
  • Membership of a professional body such as the IET or IAM
  • Knowledge of electrical EHV, HV and LV systems (experience in electrical distribution systems through the range 33kV to 400V)
  • Identify problems, understand essential issues and investigate alternatives
  • Manage the budget within a defined area of the strategic operations business to ensure all costs are managed correctly
  • Have a clean driving licence.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, Outlook, MS Project and (preferable) SAP Maintenance.
  • Obtain a Client Infrastructure Security Pass (providing a traceable work history and criminal records check).
  • Knowledge of asset maintenance for electrical systems
  • A project management qualification such as Prince 2 or PMP


  • Knowledge of the application of ISO 55001
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards achieving Chartership
  • Relevant Safety management qualification such as NEBOSH certificate or equivalent
