About the Department
SSE IT underpins the technology needs of all the different businesses that make up the SSE group. From emerging technologies to data and analytics to cyber security - we power SSEs growth and enable it to generate value, while keeping it secure. As a trusted business partner that helps SSE lead in a low carbon world, we are proud of our service. Working for SSE IT is all about equipping SSE for now and the future.
What is the Role
As a Senior Solution Architect, you'll be responsible for delivering the high-level architectures and roadmaps of IT changes, that are required to respond to the changing needs of our Energy Trading business. You'll establish strong relationships with stakeholders by inspiring confidence in the delivery of a mix of large programmes (up to £20M), an annual portfolio of business-focused projects and initiatives to improve our internal IT capabilities. Reporting to the Lead Solution Architect you'll work in an IT team that is dedicated to serving Energy Trading, backed up by wider Group IT functions such as infrastructure delivery.
This is an exciting time in our business with challenges around cloud migration, management of technology obsolescence and data and analytical insights all requiring architectural guidance.
A key part of the role will be to ensure we make progress on our key challenges, while keeping solutions aligned to organisation and industry standards, relevant programme architectures and business requirements. You'll run the Solution Integrity Group that will govern all designs and changes for the business unit, as well as participating in group wide governance forums.
What do I need
Rather than a purely technical or infrastructure view, you'll deliver fully-rounded IT solutions for the Energy Trading business. This will be based on significant experience in a solution architect role and having worked with a diverse range of technologies, ideally covering some of: integration technologies; Oracle database; data management and analytics; Microsoft Azure and cloud migration. Previous experience of Energy Trading within the utilities sector would also be an advantage.
You'll be able to evidence a pragmatic approach to balancing the long-term (strategic) and short-term implications of project proposals and decisions, with a strong focus on delivery. This will be backed by a broad range of experience covering Enterprise, Solution and Technical architecture, preferably from a full software development lifecycle background. The role requires you to deliver within SSEs standard change delivery framework and process and you will have experience of working in a similarly structured and methodical way. A key part of the architecture delivery process will be to expand and maintain the architecture baselines, so modelling skills and knowledge of frameworks such as TOGAF will be valuable. You'll have performed a design assurance role and have either managed, or been a significant contributor to, IT governance groups.
Your ability to establish strong and effective working relationships with key stakeholders, including business sponsors, Business Transformation Leads, Relationship Managers and delivery teams, is essential to this role. As part of this you will use your past experience to provide leadership to architecture colleagues and to help develop our internal IT delivery staff.
Please be aware if you are successful, you'll be required to complete our pre-employment screening process before joining SSE.
