Working as part of a highly skilled team you will be required to carry out essential maintenance and repairs on our high voltage substation equipment.

With the opportunity to travel all around the country, you will work at a variety of substations across the company’s power network, ensuring that National Grid can meet its requirements for safety, efficiency and reliability.

This role sits in an industry with a high level of safety critical activities so there is a requirement for a disciplined and responsible approach to work, following instructions and complying with stringent safety rules, policies and procedures.

This is an opportunity to develop specialist skills and knowledge to enable you to progress into a Substation Craftsperson role. As part of the training you will also complete the Power Network Craftsperson Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3 Programme.

What you'll do

The programme is 3 years in duration and features a blended learning approach including gaining a Diploma in Electrical Power Engineering – (City & Guilds)

Year 1 – The majority of the year will be spent at our training Academy in Eakring, Nottinghamshire. Here you will begin your structured training covering both technical and academic training

Year 2 – In year 2 your time will be split between Eakring and at Substation sites. You will be allocated a mentor but will also be supported by the teams you are working with. You will start to put some of the training you have learned into practice by shadowing during the delivery of work.

Year 3 – During your final year you will be spending most of your time at various substations to ensure that you are getting a wide variety of experiences to fulfil your logbook.Whilst on programme, Apprentices can typically expect to:

  • Adhere to safety practices and procedures, carry out risk assessments, check the condition of the work site
  • Shadow experienced Craftspersons and engage in on site work according to skill level
  • Use electrical/mechanical knowledge and skills to install, maintain and dismantle a wide variety of high voltage plant and apparatus including transformers, switchgear, cable terminations and other associated equipment
  • Be an active member of the working party once at the required skill level and be responsible for other members of the working party carrying out maintenance and repairs on the system whilst working under the safety document
  • Working as part of a larger team that is responsible for a zone/geographical area
  • Complete work according to outage restrictions and targets
  • Apply electrical theories and principles to use electronic equipment to carry out diagnostic fault finding procedures
  • Gain new skills and knowledge via training at our Nottinghamshire based training centre
Role Requirements

You must have, or be predicted to gain, a Grade C or above/4-9 GCSE in English Language and Maths. In addition to the GCSE requirements, you must also have one of the following sets of qualifications: 3 other GCSE's - must be in IT, Technical Drawing, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Science, English Literature, Geography or History (Grade C or above)

or

Engineering diploma/qualification i.e. BTEC (Pass or above)

To apply for this role, you must hold a valid full UK car driving licence, or be willing to learn to drive and agree to security a valid full UK car driving licence within 12 months after joining the programme or as soon as possible after your 17th birthday.

Some of our roles will require peripatetic working, which means that you will be working within a team with no base location and will be required to travel across multiple sites.In some cases the vacancy locations cover a large geographical area, this is because you will be working as part of a team that is responsible for a number of key sites within this area and on completion of your apprenticeship you would be required to travel to these sites regularly. As part of the application you will be asked to select your preference from the locations stated below and you will be required to be within 45 minutes travel time of thatlocation.

What you'll get

You will receive a starting salary of£17,743and you will work towards a level 3 qualificationworth approximately £20,000.You will also have access to a number of additional benefits such as 25 days’ holiday, full board accommodation whilst away at our training academy and all travel expenses paid for when you’re not at your base location.
