About the role
Here at the Transmission Network Control Centre (TNCC), we are at the heart of real time operational control of the high voltage electricity transmission system. The ‘Network’ consists of over 14,000km of circuit (400kV and 275kV), nearly 800 supergrid transformers and 340 substations.
The TNCC Control Room operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is responsible for a number of critical activities including facilitating safe access to the Network for maintenance and construction, responding to faults, events, alarms and phone calls, and ensuring the safety of our Operations teams in the field.
However, the TNCC is not just about the Control Room. Working in parallel are the ‘day office’ teams who are responsible for ensuring detailed plans and resources are in place, facilitating customer connections and changes to the Network, providing policy guidance, system and facility support and resilience arrangements, and setting the strategic direction of the TNCC.
What you'll do
If you join the TNCC as a Higher Apprentice, you will spend your time equally between Aston University, studying for a Foundation Degree in Electrical Engineering, our National Training Academy in Eakring, completing a variety of in-house, specialist training, and our office headquarters in Warwick.
Your academic studies will take up a significant proportion of your time. However, when you are in the office you will be given exposure to both the Control Room and the day office teams, and be encouraged to network extensively to really immerse yourself in the business. You will rotate around various teams within TNCC and be given projects and work to help you develop a sound understanding of the department, build your skills and provide value to the business.
You will also have the opportunity to spend some time in the field, so you can see for yourself the work that our Operations teams do in substations up and down the country. You will receive hands on experience and will develop practical skills which will support your academic studies and on-the-job learning.
On completion of the scheme you could be placed in any of the teams within TNCC, and your post-scheme role will depend on business need and availability. We will however do our very best to take your preferences into account; wherever you end up we will provide an exciting and rewarding future in the TNCC.
You must have, or be predicted to gain, a Grade C or above/4-9 GCSE in English Language.
In addition to the GCSE requirements, you must also have one of the following sets of qualifications:
- 2 A-Levels - 1 must be in either Maths or Physics (Grade C or above)
- BTEC National Certificate Level 3 in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or Engineering (Merit or Distinction with the Maths modules being Merit or Distinction)
- BTEC National Diploma Level 3 in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or Engineering (Merit or Distinction with the Maths modules being Merit or Distinction)
- ONC in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (Merit or Distinction with the Maths modules being Merit or Distinction)
- HNC/HND in Electrical, Electronic or Mechanical Engineering (Pass, Merit or Distinction)
- Degree in Maths, Physics, Chemistry or Engineering
To apply for this role, you must hold a valid full UK car driving licence, or be willing to learn to drive and agree to secure a valid full UK car driving licence at least 3 months before the programmes start date.

On successful completion of the Apprenticeship, you will receive a Foundation Degree (FdEng) in Electrical Power Engineering (Power Systems Management) – fully subsidised and paid for by National Grid.

You will be challenged from the start as you juggle studying for your Foundation degree with invaluable work experience, but we’ll support you every step of the way.
What you'll get
You will receive a starting salary of £24,017 and you will work towards a level 4 qualification or a foundation degree depending on the programme. You will also have access to a number of additional benefits such as 25 days’ holiday, full board accommodation whilst away at our training academy and all travel expenses paid for when you’re not at your base location.
